The thing underneath both of those is not weakness. It is a loop doing exactly what it was built to do.

The word dopamine gets used loosely, usually to mean "the pleasure chemical." That's not quite it, and the difference is the whole story. Dopamine neurons fire in anticipation of a reward more than they fire during it. Neuroscientist Wolfram Schultz's decades of research on this, now foundational in the field, showed that dopamine tracks a reward prediction error: a burst of activity when something better than expected might be coming, not a steady glow once it arrives. The chemical that's supposed to feel like satisfaction is mostly the chemical of "there might be more."
Psychiatrist Anna Lembke, who studies compulsive digital use at Stanford, describes what happens next as a balance. "Imagine our brain contains a scale, a fulcrum in the center," she explains. Pleasure tips it one way. But the brain doesn't want to stay tipped, so it corrects, tilting back toward discomfort, a small dip below your baseline that shows up as restlessness, or the urge to reach for one more. Over time the same amount of scrolling delivers less lift, so the loop asks for more frequency, more duration, more stimulation to hit the same spot.
This is why "just have more willpower tomorrow" rarely works. You're not negotiating with a preference. You're negotiating with a system that discharges before you've consciously registered wanting anything, that's designed to stay unpredictable specifically so you can't predict your way out of it, and that makes stopping feel like a small loss instead of a neutral choice. The loop isn't asking you a question you can reason your way out of. It's already running by the time the reasoning part of your brain shows up.
What actually interrupts the loop
None of these rely on outlasting the urge through sheer willpower. They work by changing the mechanism itself, not by fighting it head-on.
- Put a stopping point back into the system. The loop exploits the absence of a natural edge, so build one back in. Turn off autoplay. Use an extension that removes infinite scroll and turns your feed back into a page with an end. You're not adding discipline, you're restoring the edge the design removed.
- Make starting cost more than stopping. Move the app off your home screen, log out after each use, delete it and reinstall only when you deliberately want it. Friction at the start does more than willpower at the end, because the loop is easiest to interrupt before the first discharge fires.
- Let the dip pass instead of solving it. When the urge to keep going hits after you've closed the app, that restlessness is the dopamine deficit correcting itself, not a signal that something is actually wrong. It passes on its own, usually within minutes, if you don't feed it another hit.
- Give yourself a different kind of anticipation. Since the pull is about wanting more than having, redirect the wanting somewhere with an actual edge, a short walk, a call, a task with a visible end, so the anticipation has somewhere to land besides the next thumbnail.
- Track what you actually got, not what you expected to get. Before opening the app, name what you're hoping to feel. After, check whether you got it. The gap between the two is usually where the real information is, and seeing it in writing is more convincing than any amount of telling yourself to do better.
None of this makes the loop disappear forever. Everyone's dopamine system works this way, and unpredictable rewards will always pull at it. The goal isn't a brain that stops wanting things. It's catching the discharge early enough that you're choosing the next scroll instead of just being carried by it.
